The Discovery science summer camp is a hands-on training in plant molecular biology for high school students from the Weslaco School District, in Weslaco, South Texas. The project director Dr. Eliezer Louzada was funded in 2007 with the amount of $ 245,000 by the USDA-Hispanic Serving Institution Education Grants Program to train students and science teachers. The idea is to make the students excited about going to career in agricultural science at Texas A$M University- Kingsville. So far we had two very successful summer camps and trained 28 high school students and 6 science teachers. We were just funded for almost $300,000 to provide addtional internships for the students and scholarships to attact them to college at Texas A&M- Kingsville.
